Whether it’s developing pioneering technologies or conducting cutting-edge research, integrating innovation, research and industry into higher education institutions is highly beneficial to society as a whole. In the move towards devolution, local governments may take the opportunity to prioritise local research projects, innovation hubs or university expansion if they benefit local economies and communities, and help to strengthen a region's social infrastructure.

For every £1 of public funding spent on research, the UK higher education sector generates £9.90 through its research and knowledge exchange. Forging stronger partnerships between universities and industries like manufacturing, technology or healthcare could lead to significant social and economic benefits for local communities.

Students at a university will also benefit from specialist facilities, learning from world-leading researchers and lecturers, and building employability skills by forming links to industry and employer organisations.
