A Passivhaus record-breaker for University of Leicester
The £42m George Davies Centre is the new home for the university’s Centre for Medicine. It provides first-class learning facilities, and was a Passivhaus first in the UK.
Underpinning this building was a hugely ambitious scope, focusing on making the new space low in energy consumption and low-carbon in operation. At the time of completion, it was the largest non-residential Passivhaus building in the UK.
Our sustainability journey with University of Warwick
We’ve been working with the University of Warwick for over a decade to help shape their estate’s sustainability strategy.
With targets to be net-zero for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030, and Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050, we've been working with the university to help turn these aspirations into a reality. From reducing operational carbon and implementing best-practice energy monitoring, to producing retrospective embodied carbon studies.
Hollycroft Primary School
Hollycroft Primary School was Leicestershire County Council's first net-zero in operation school! It has played a key role in the council’s plan to become a net-zero carbon county by 2045.
The building took a fabric-first approach, using materials with a low U-value to enhance the building’s thermal efficiency. Embodied carbon was also reduced through material selection.
Our team used advanced modelling, through Energy Synergy, to help inform the design of the building. Using this modelling enabled our team to interrogate how changes to the design would positively or negatively impact on the sustainability of the building.
Offices of the Future
Office spaces have seen a seismic shift in the last few years, and more change may be on the way.
Any commercial office spaces that don't meet an EPC rating of C by 2027 and B by 2030 will become unlettable, meaning the energy efficiency and sustainability credentials of a building will become evermore important in the coming years. Coupled with the changing requirements of end-users, many office spaces may need to undergo a transformation to remain lettable and desirable.

Caerphilly Passivhaus
When you consider heating a Passivhaus home can cost around £1 a day, no wonder Caerphilly County Borough Council chose this approach for its first development of homes in nearly two decades. In doing so, it became the first council in South Wales to choose this ultra-efficient standard for a housing project.
The race is on to achieve net zero by 2050. Currently 80% of property is already built, and property is one of the worse emitters of carbon. So the main focus is on delivering a decarbonised built environment that reduces climate change and safeguards the future for the next generations. Our Brilliant Buildings explains how this can be done.
