Willmott Dixon has been appointed by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to carry out the first phase of Bury Interchange’s regeneration.
Procured through the SCAPE Construction Framework, Phase 1 of Bury Interchange will include Metrolink tram platform improvement works and a new footbridge over the Metrolink tram lines, which will provide a direct link to Union Square, with step-free access to Pyramid Park via a new pedestrian route. The bridge will allow plans for Phase 2 of the redevelopment to progress, with the footbridge ensuring passengers will be able to access trams once the next phase of the scheme gets underway.
Willmott Dixon is due to begin works in November, with completion of Phase 1 expected early 2028.
Willmott Dixon and TfGM previously worked together to deliver the award-winning £140m Stockport Interchange scheme which turned Stockport’s bus station into a modern transport interchange and mixed-use facility. More recently, they worked together on a separate £40m programme of bus depot electrification projects, as part of TfGM’s new integrated transport network.
Anthony Dillon, Managing Director for Willmott Dixon in the North:
“We are proud to be working alongside Transport for Greater Manchester once again on another vital investment in local transport facilities in the heart of Bury, creating a key piece of infrastructure to help enable plans for the wider regeneration of Bury Interchange. This is an exciting time for Bury with the ongoing Bury Town Centre masterplan, and we’re excited to be playing our part in helping re-shape Bury Interchange, providing a 57-meter steel pedestrian footbridge and essential platform and access upgrades to support Phase 2 of the Interchange’s redevelopment.”
Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester:
“The redevelopment of Bury Interchange will make journeys easier for people using Bee Network trams and buses and deliver vast improvements for Bury town centre. Starting next month, we will begin to turn this outdated facility into a modern, accessible and welcoming place, putting public transport at the heart of the town's regeneration.”
Mark Robinson, Group Chief Executive at SCAPE:
“We are proud to be building on our positive, collaborative relationship with Transport for Greater Manchester. Alongside Willmott Dixon, we have successfully delivered several transformative projects on behalf of TfGM, including seven bus depots. This latest scheme is another important milestone in our partnership and will play a significant role in providing passengers and local people with improved transport links and facilities.”
In addition to the £140m Stockport Interchange (below), Willmott Dixon's track record of delivering modern transport spans the £17m net-zero North Shields Transport Hub and £16m sustainable Halifax Bus Station. The company is currently on site delivering £36.8m worth of bus stations in Dewsbury and Huddersfield and recently renovated Darlington Train Station’s gateway as part of a £140m masterplan.
