Overview
The Wixams Academy 6FE (Six-Form Entry) Expansion is a state-of-the-art education facility, designed to accommodate the growing demand for secondary school places in Bedford. Delivered in partnership with Bedford Borough Council, the project provides modern teaching spaces, a high-performance sports hall, an all-weather pitch, and multiple-use games areas (MUGAs), ensuring that students have access to first-class learning and recreational facilities.
Developed through the SCAPE 5 National Framework, the project integrates energy-efficient building design, sustainable construction methods, and flexible learning spaces, creating an innovative, adaptable school environment that aligns with Net Zero Carbon objectives.
Constructed with a hot-rolled steel frame and high-performance cladding, the new three-storey teaching block will support Wixams Academy’s long-term educational vision, providing a future-proofed infrastructure for generations of students.

Project Delivery & Challenges Overcome
Delivering a major school expansion within an active campus required careful coordination and a collaborative, phased construction approach. Key challenges addressed include:
- Minimising disruption to students and staff by implementing segregated work zones and phased handovers.
- Integrating modern teaching and sports facilities into an existing school environment, requiring seamless design and logistics management.
- Ensuring the project meets Net Zero Carbon aspirations, integrating high-performance insulation, renewable energy, and advanced ventilation systems.
- Managing infrastructure upgrades, including site-wide hard and soft landscaping, improved drainage systems, and enhanced accessibility features.
Despite complex site constraints and supply chain challenges, the project remains on track for completion in November 2024, ensuring that Bedford Borough Council meets the growing demand for secondary school places.
