University Hospital Llandough
New Spinal Rehabilitation Unit for South Wales
As part of Welsh Government’s commitment to invest in the modernisation of NHS Wales and the improvement of facilities and outcomes for patients, our team have delivered a new spinal rehabilitation unit together with the refurbishment and extension works to existing wards. This has replaced the outdated facilities currently housed at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff and will is one of only twelve spinal rehabilitation units in the UK.
The state-of-the-art unit features a 26-bed spinal cord injury rehabilitation ward, a 24-bed specialist neuro rehabilitation ward, a critical care service, a purpose-built hydrotherapy unit and independent living facilities to support earlier return to home.
The project involved the refurbishment of 4248m2 over three internal templates, taking them back to the structure before adding four new single and double height extensions totalling an additional 1400m2. The finished building features a slate tile roof.
Operating within a live hospital site, the project team had to put in place complex logistic plans across the wider hospital facility to minimise the impact of the construction process, whilst allowing the health board to continue to provide a facility that supports and cares for the patients and enables staff to deliver an exceptional service.
Neal Stephens, managing director of Willmott Dixon Wales and The West said:
“This new unit provides patients and staff with access to modern state-of-the-art treatment facilities, which will have a large and measurable impact for the people of Cardiff and the wider region.
The project has also delivered additional benefits for the wider community, through providing training opportunities for the long term unemployed and ex-offenders, and supporting developing social enterprise that will provide a healthy canteen for those working on site.”
Awarded through the Scape Major Works framework, this project was part of a wider engagement with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board which has seen us refurbishing part of the Cardiff Royal Infirmary.
