96 high-quality, sustainable homes, helping to foster inclusive and diverse communities
One of the UK's biggest retirement villages, providing nearly 500 homes for people over 55
One of the UK's biggest purpose built retirement villages, Shenley Wood has been instrumental in taking the retirement village market to a new level of quality and expectation.
Set in 10 acres, the village has 300 one- and two-bedroom homes, with a wide range of facilities to encourage independence and an active lifestyle in later life. Over a third of residents receive help with their care needs, while those that have significant care requirements are also catered for.
Willmott Dixon built the village in two phases over two years, with 143 homes for sale, 82 for shared ownership and 75 for rent.
Phase one was for 184 homes and a communal village centre, and phase two completed the development with the remaining homes and a three storey gallery.
During phase two, with many residents in residents, our project team was sensitive to residents needs and concerns. Working hours were restricted to minimise disruption, and regular, friendly consultation helped ensure all residents and stakeholders were kept informed.
National sector care manager Debbie Sizer:
"Shenley Wood is gives older people a lifestyle that fits their aspirations, allowing them to live independently while also receiving care by highly trained professionals should they need it. It’s the sign of things to come for this segment of the market, and likewise requires very specialised experience from a building perspective to get the finishes right.”

National sector care manager Debbie Sizer:
“The secret of successful delivery in the care market is meticulous planning, attention to detail and a good helping of empathy - understanding the unique requirements. Quality has to be very high due to the dependence residents have on their environments.”
