Gateshead HEIGHTs

Appointed by Gateshead Council, we delivered an extensive refurbishment of seven high-rise tower blocks in Gateshead to create a modern and energy efficient living environment for thousands of people living in 622 homes.

The 1960’s buildings were in need of a complete overhaul and our work included new cladding to all façades along with concrete parapet repairs on one of the blocks (Regent Court). We also fitted new energy efficient systems such as Ground Source Heat Pumps, District Heating and Combined Heat and Power Units (CHP) across all buildings.

Each property has its own smart meter to manage energy consumption while existing singled glazed windows were replaced with UPVC units. The project also included a CHP system whereby any power not used is fed back into the grid for the council to use and deliver cost efficiencies.

Award winning community engagement

Building a outstanding relationship with the local community was critical for the success for the project known as Gateshead HEIGHTs, as refurbishment work was carried out in a live environment. Thanks to the efforts made by Clare Lewis, resident liaison officer, Willmott Dixon’s efforts were recognised at the Construction News Awards, picking up the prestigious Community Engagement Project of the Year in 2019.
