Willmott Dixon, Mosslands School, Department for Education (DfE) and Wirral Council have marked a key milestone in the construction of the new Mosslands School in Wallasey with a steel signing ceremony, bringing together pupils, education leaders and project partners to celebrate progress on the £61 million redevelopment.
The ceremony last week saw the latest steel beam signed by attendees before being installed as part of the new three-storey secondary school, which is due to be completed in 2028. The event provided guests with an opportunity to witness construction progress first-hand.
Among those attending were School Headteacher Adrian Whiteley, school pupils, representatives from the DfE, including Sally Pearson, Deputy Director in the Capital Directorate, members of Wirral Council, including Deputy Council Leader Julie McManus and Dame Angela Eagle MP, and Willmott Dixon’s Northern Managing Director, Anthony Dillon.
The new school building, designed by Ellis Williams Architects, will provide a modern, state-of-the-art learning environment for pupils. The redevelopment will also include two sports halls, a replacement all-weather sports pitch, a multi-use games area, new car parking and cycle storage facilities.
The new building reflects The Mosslands’ ongoing commitment to giving every pupil the best possible start in life, while strengthening connections with families and the wider community.
Supporting the DfE and the school's sustainability ambitions, the new campus is being designed to achieve Net Zero Carbon in Operation.
Anthony Dillon, Managing Director for the North at Willmott Dixon:
"Today's steel signing marks an exciting milestone in the transformation of The Mosslands School and it was great to celebrate this achievement with the school, DfE, Willmott Dixon team and our project partners. Having students sign the steelwork that will form part of their new school highlights the lasting legacy this project will create. Throughout construction, we have been creating opportunities for the local community and helping young people develop the skills needed for future careers in construction."
Adrian Whiteley, Headteacher at The Mosslands School:
“This building marks a bright new chapter for our community. All of our staff and students are delighted that construction of the new school building is progressing well, and the steel signing marks an exciting milestone in the school's history and a proud moment for the wider community.
“This development will deliver a world-class facility that our boys truly deserve, a vibrant, modern learning environment designed to inspire curiosity, ambition and achievement for generations of learners to come. Every space within the new building has been carefully planned to support outstanding teaching and learning, while also opening doors to opportunities that extend far beyond the curriculum, from sport and the arts to leadership and enterprise. This is about so much more than steel, bricks and mortar. It's an investment in our boys, in their families, and in the future of our local community. We cannot wait to see the difference it will make.”
Cllr Julie McManus, Deputy Leader of Wirral Council:
“The Mosslands School is one of a number of schools being transformed through the DfE’s School Rebuilding Programme, which is delivering improved facilities and high-quality learning environments for future generations. We’re delighted to see this level of investment in Wirral, helping to provide our young people with the best possible start in life and a school environment they can truly be proud of.
“It’s a really exciting time for everyone at Mosslands, and I’m thrilled to be here today to mark this important milestone.”
